PREFACE
The writer of these humble notes came from the law practice, through the army barracks, into the pulpit in 1930. In the seminary, because of his vast ignorance of almost everything that pertained to the Bible and Christianity, he learned to record carefully every professorial utterance and every suggestion that came to him from books.
The large percentage of these writings are not original, hence this evangelist has no hesitation about claiming unusual value for them. They will prove extremely helpful in Bible study, in sermonizing, in Sunday school teaching, in preparing religious addresses. These also are published by urgent request of many preachers and lay workers. Even though it has been an arduous task to compile them, it is hoped that similar volumes will follow.
May the God of all wisdom add His favor and blessings to these Bible notes. May they help Christians to love the Word of God more, and bring sinners to Jesus Christ.

WHO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE?
Exodus 32:26
The incident in Israel’s history. Satan vs. God for a nation. The Jews were left alone (Joshua; Elijah; Jesus; Paul).
- The Conflict of Satan vs. God Today
Two very distinct lines, although moderns have lost sight of the fact.
- Who is Not on the Lord’s Side?
- The out-and-out sinner.
- The disobedient, drifting, unconcerned, indifferent Christian.
- The ungrateful and insensitive.
III. Why Be on the Lord’s Side?
- The devil is a tyrant – God is the Liberator.
- The side of truth, of virtue, of purity, of decency, of righteousness, of clean living.
- The strongest, the happiest, the most useful, the safest, the eventually victorious side.
- It brings great rewards here and hereafter.
- What is Expected of Those on the Lord’s Side? (Luke 9:23)
- A complete forsaking of the other side. Cannot serve God and mammon, Christ and the world.
- A definite espousal of God and His cause.
- A surrendered, obedient, public consecration of time, talents, money, lives.
- A continuous communion with the Captain in prayer, in Bible study, in church work.
- A ceaseless fight to the death vs. sin.
- A striving, burning, yearning desire to see others won to Christ.
- When Should We Answer God’s Appeal?
- The obligation of personal consecration.
- The obligation of renouncing earthly ties, so far as inconsistent with the higher allegiance.
- The obligation of doing the Lord’s work.

CLEARING THE WAY FOR GOD
Joshua 3:5
The Jews crossed Jordan into the Promised Land. The Jews looked at the Promised Land with swollen, turbulent Jordan in front of them.
- We Are Facing Jordans
- In our personal lives: lack of great spiritual power.
- In our homes: unsaved, unenlisted members of our families.
- In our churches: unconsecrated, world-serving members.
- In our communities: unsaved, unenlisted, unconcerned men and women.
- Up Yonder is the Promised Land Flowing With Milk and Honey
- Our lives must be filled with the Holy Spirit; we must be effective and efficient in the service of Jesus Christ.
- Our homes must be citadels of truth, of virtue, of religious light; our family altars must be maintained.
- Our churches must hold the banner of the Cross aloft above the sin and corruption of a lost world; every member must be in his place.
- Our communities must be won for Christ; souls must be saved and added to the Church. Religion must crowd out pleasure and sin.
III. God Alone Can Split the Waters of Jordan so That We May Cross
- He has done it in times past (for example, Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Samuel, Paul and Silas, Peter, Wesley, Whitefield, Moody).
- He can do it again. The Word is to warn, to test, to guide, to inspire. The blood is to redeem, to cleanse, to save. The Holy Spirit is to guide, to instruct, to make effective.
- He will do it again. He has promised to do so (II Chron. 7:14; Jer. 33:3). He will do it for us.
- Let Us Clear the Way for God
- “To sanctify” means “to search out,” “to put away,” “to take up.”
- All of us must clear the way for God in our homes, in our churches, in our communities.
- Let us do it now, exposing our souls to the white light of God’s holiness, crying for grace to put away the evil thing from among us, asking for power to take up and bear our crosses.

A NEEDED REVIVAL
I Samuel 7:2-6
Needed: because of the condition of the Jews.
Effected: under God, by the influence of one man.
Marked: by features of a peculiar nature.
Vital need of religious revival today. Must not be confined to talk and conventions, but must be met by action. We must be thankful for this opportunity.
- A General Concern About the Presence of the Lord
- The bitter effects of transgression. We have lost God.
- B. America as a nation is built on the prayer meeting.
- Prospered by God. Defaulting. Embezzlement.
- Let us come back to find God. Let us long for His favor.
- Earnest Attention to the Word of the Lord
- We need the old Gospel. Spoken with Holy Ghost power, faithfully and zealously.
- To test the sincerity of our desires and purposes.
- To instruct us in our duty.
- To encourage us in the hope of deliverance.
III. A Sincere Renunciation of Sin Against the Lord
- A proof of the genuineness of our repentance.
- Positive acts of obedience and piety (for example, the Ephesians burned books worth 50,000 pieces of silver).
- “Put away the gods from among you.”
- A Public Consecration to the Service of the Lord
- Sincere humiliation on account of former disobedience.
- Solemn vows of obedience.
- Prayers and supplications for divine mercy and help.
N.B. We Have Lost God
- In our personal lives: unrest, uncertainty, unhappiness.
- In our homes: divorce, unfaithfulness, misery.
- In our business world.
- In our schools: jungle ethics.
- In our churches: backslidden crowds.
Our need: earnest supplication for the mercy of God.
Our lack: deep love to God; loyalty to Christ; longing for souls.
